Few enthusiasts are using the first generation FX processors in 2020 for their liquid nitrogen experiments. And this feature of outdated AMD chips comes in handy when it comes to economical overclocking and achieving relatively easy records.
Judge for yourself: the cost of the same FX-8150 on the secondary market is extremely low, which makes the threshold for entering the world of extreme overclocking nowhere lower. You do not need to worry about the chip failing at the time of the experiment and you will need to buy the CPU again to continue the bench session. You can simply purchase several FX-8150s at once and experiment for your own pleasure. Fortunately, the price allows.
This feature was used by an American overclocker under the pseudonym Matt26LFC. He set a record in the AMD FX-8150 rank in the wPrime – 32m discipline:
To achieve such a high frequency of 7050MHz, the overclocker used a top-end motherboard for socket AM3 + ASUS ROG Crosshair V Formula, RAM manufactured by G.SKILL, solid-state drive Kingstone SSDNow V (based on PC29AS21BA0 controller)б and power supply from Super Flower, model Leadex at 1600 watts.
The result of this bench session was 4 seconds, 531 milliseconds:
