A preliminary list of Xiaomi smartphones set to receive MIUI 12 in the second half of 2020 has been published. Some models, like the Redmi 5A and Mi A-series, won't get the update.
As early as January 10, Xiaomi began closed beta testing for the 12th version of its MIUI firmware. Just yesterday, the company published a preliminary list of smartphones set to receive the new OS overlay in the second half of 2020:
Xiaomi Mi Note 10, Mi Note 10 Pro, Redmi K20, Mi 9T, Redmi K20 Pro, Mi 9T Pro, Redmi K30, Redmi Note 6, Redmi Note 6 Pro, Redmi 6, Redmi 6A, Redmi 7, Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7s, Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi 7A, Mi 8 Pro, Mi 8, Mi 8 Lite, Mi Mix 3, Mi Mix 2S, Mi 9 Pro, Mi 9, Mi 9 Lite, Mi Play, Redmi Note 8, Redmi Note 8T, Redmi Note 8 Pro, Redmi 8, Redmi 8A and Mi Mix Alpha.
It's entirely possible this list will grow to include some top models from the Redmi 5 lineup. However, what's certain is that budget phones like the Redmi 5A will remain on MIUI 11 and won't receive the MIUI 12 update.
Some Xiaomi Mi A2 and Mi A3 users mistakenly believe their devices will also receive the new MIUI 12 overlay, but that's not the case. The Mi A2 and Mi A3 run on stock Android and are part of the Android One program. Therefore, they should only expect a new version of Android 10. In fact, it has already been released for the Xiaomi Mi A2 here.
Preliminary reports indicate that the new MIUI 12 firmware will bring further changes to the graphical interface, several new features and applications, and will be slightly faster than its predecessor.
