MediaTek has unveiled its budget Helio G70 and G70T SoCs, targeting affordable gaming smartphones. They feature an 8-core CPU, Mali-G52 graphics, but lack 5G support.
Based on the specifications, both new chips are clearly aimed at competing with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 600 series SoCs. However, the Helio G70 might even approach Snapdragon 710 level performance.
The configuration of the new 8-core SoCs is quite predictable: four ARM Cortex-A75 cores handle the heavy lifting, clocked at 2000MHz, while four ARM Cortex-A55 cores provide efficiency, with a maximum frequency of 1700MHz. MediaTek's official website doesn't disclose the manufacturing process for these new chips, but it's highly likely to be a 12nm FinFET process.
Graphics duties on both the Helio G70 and Helio G70T SoCs are handled by the relatively current ARM Mali-G52 2EEMC2 GPU, with a maximum clock speed of 820MHz.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИIt's worth noting that neither new SoC supports the increasingly popular 5G connectivity standard. However, the Helio G70 and Helio G70T do support a single camera module up to 48 megapixels, or dual 16MP modules. Display resolution is capped at 2520x1080 (FullHD+).
Right now, it's genuinely tough to predict how competitive or performant MediaTek's new Helio G70 and Helio G70T SoCs will be. However, our colleagues at XDA speculate that the Helio G70 will perform roughly on par with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 600 series processors.
Curiously, the specifications of the new Helio G70 and Helio G70T chips almost exactly mirror last June's Helio P65 SoC. It's possible that the Helio P65 wasn't popular among smartphone manufacturers, leading MediaTek to opt for a rebranding.
