David Cage believes game developers will prioritize 1080p ray tracing over 4K, arguing that realistic lighting is far more important than raw resolution.
Quantic Dream head David Cage, one of the industry's most influential developers, recently shared his thoughts on the role of 4K resolution and ray tracing in future games. He believes that next-gen consoles won't make native 4K the default standard, as the visual impact of ray tracing far outweighs a simple bump in resolution.
Many developers will prefer ray tracing at Full HD over limited lighting at 4K. Ray tracing, realistic lighting and reflections, advanced shaders, optical effects, and enhanced post-processing are exactly the features our R&D department is currently building into our new next-gen engine for consoles and PC.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИCage seems to suggest that next-gen consoles simply won't have enough horsepower to handle all these advanced visual features and output native 4K at the same time. That said, we shouldn't rule out indie developers, competitive shooters, or MMORPGs, which will likely still prioritize crisp 4K over ray tracing.
