Reviews confirm the GeForce RTX 3070 delivers RTX 2080 Ti performance for a fraction of the price and with much lower power draw.
NVIDIA has lifted the review embargo on the mainstream GeForce RTX 3070, and major tech outlets have published their benchmarks. Jensen Huang didn't disappoint: the RTX 3070 really does deliver performance on par with the much more expensive RTX 2080 Ti. Sure, there is a minor catch, which we'll cover below, but given the price of the RTX 3070, any remaining advantages of the RTX 2080 Ti pale in comparison. But let's take it step by step.
Traditionally, NVIDIA's xx70-tier cards have often matched or beaten the previous generation's flagships. We saw this with the GTX 670 and GTX 580, the GTX 970 and 780 Ti, and of course, the GTX 1070 and 980 Ti. So Jensen Huang's claim that the RTX 3070 would match the RTX 2080 Ti surprised few. That said, the RTX 2070 failed to catch up to the GTX 1080 Ti (a feat only somewhat achieved much later by the RTX 2070 Super), so some enthusiasts still had their doubts about the RTX 3070's final performance.
But Jensen Huang was spot on. Except for scenarios where the RTX 3070's 8GB of VRAM becomes a bottleneck, the new mainstream card delivers performance virtually identical to the RTX 2080 Ti.
Our colleagues at Wccftech have already run a comprehensive benchmark suite on the RTX 3070, pitting it against the RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 3080, RTX 2080 Super, RTX 2070 Super, GTX 1080, GTX 1070, GTX 1080 Ti, as well as the RX 5700, RX 5700 XT, and RX Vega 64:
They also measured the power consumption of some of these cards:

Ultimately, the benchmarks show that the GeForce RTX 3070 delivers on the promise made by NVIDIA's CEO. The new card catches up to the RTX 2080 Ti while drawing significantly less power and having a much smaller footprint!
The RTX 3070 traded blows with the RTX 2080 Ti depending on the game, sometimes pulling slightly ahead and other times falling slightly behind. Overall, this points to practical parity between the two GPUs.
At least until AMD's competing Radeon RX 6000 series cards launch tomorrow, October 28, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 offers unmatched performance for its $499 price tag. It easily handles high-framerate gaming at 1440p, and even holds its own in 4K, while keeping power consumption relatively low.
