Benchmarks reveal that the AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT delivers similar gaming performance to the more affordable Intel Core i5-10400. However, AMD's AM4 platform remains the better value for PC builds right now.
Just a few hours ago, Teclab published gaming benchmarks for two CPUs: the AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT and Intel Core i5-10400. This gave us our first look at the performance of AMD's new six-core Matisse Refresh chip.
First, it's worth noting that the Ryzen 5 3600XT is a 95-watt chip, while the Core i5-10400 is officially rated at 65 watts. Unofficially, however, we know the Core i5-10400's power consumption can reach up to 90 watts.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИLet's look at the performance comparison between the AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT and Intel Core i5-10400:
Game | Intel Core i5-10400 (Average FPS) | AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT (Average FPS) |
|---|---|---|
World War Z (1080p Vulkan) | 162 FPS | 160 FPS |
CS:GO (1080p) | 349.56 FPS | 351.49 FPS |
Shadow of The Tomb Raider (1080p DX12) | 116 FPS | 115 FPS |
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint (1080p Vulkan) | 129 FPS | 126 FPS |
Metro Exodus (1080p DX12) | 74.34 FPS | 73.29 FPS |
Rainbow Six Siege (1080p) | 307 FPS | 303 FPS |
Assassin's Creed Odyssey (1080p) | 78 FPS | 81 FPS |
Borderlands 3 (1080p DX12) | 82.46 FPS | 79.64 FPS |
The results from our colleagues appear quite disappointing for the Ryzen 5 3600XT. Consider this: it's priced at $249, while the competing Core i5-10400, which performs similarly, costs only around $190. Even the recently discounted Ryzen 5 3600X, now $200, isn't the best value. But, as odd as it may sound, AMD doesn't necessarily need to cut prices on its six-core models in the near future. A cheaper CPU needs to be paired with an affordable motherboard, and that's where Intel currently runs into issues.
Compatible LGA 1200 motherboards are currently expensive, making a system built on that platform significantly pricier.
Ultimately, while the Intel Core i5-10400 CPU itself offers better value, investing in the AMD AM4 platform makes more sense right now.
Obviously, the situation will improve in the coming months as more affordable LGA 1200 motherboards become available. But for now, it is what it is.
