The PlayStation 5 won't support native 1440p resolution, defaulting to 1080p instead. However, Sony could add support in a future software update.
It's hard to believe, especially since the PlayStation 5 natively supports 4K. However, according to IGN Italy, Sony's next-gen console won't support native 1440p resolution. While nothing stops you from plugging your PS5 into a 1440p display, the actual output resolution will apparently be capped at 1080p.
This probably won't be a big deal for most prospective PS5 owners. 1440p TVs are virtually non-existent, with the market dominated by 1080p and 4K panels. However, multiplatform gamers who only have a 1440p gaming monitor will have to make compromises. Right now, 1440p displays are extremely popular among gamers, offering the absolute sweet spot for price and performance.
Still, Sony could easily fix this issue in a future software update. The real question is whether they actually will.
Depending on where you live, the PlayStation 5 is set to launch on either November 12 or November 19.
