NVIDIA has revealed GeForce RTX 3070 performance: the new card is 8% faster on average than the RTX 2080 Ti and easily outperforms the RTX 2070.
NVIDIA recently announced that the GeForce RTX 3070 launch has been pushed back from October 15 to October 29. While sources claim this delay is meant to build up supply and avoid launch-day shortages, that's highly debatable. Two weeks is physically not enough time to stock up warehouse shelves. It's far more likely that NVIDIA wants to wait for official performance numbers on AMD's competing Radeon RX 6000 series before tweaking the RTX 3070's clock speeds.
Ultimately, end-users don't need to worry about these behind-the-scenes politics. What really matters is performance.
In the blog post announcing the delay, NVIDIA shared a chart showing how the RTX 3070 stacks up against the RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 Ti. The folks over at VideoCardZ took a closer look at the data to calculate the exact percentage gains:

The RTX 3070 looks to offer slightly better performance than the RTX 2080 Ti (about 8% faster on average), though it does fall behind in a few scenarios like Borderlands, Blender, and TimeSpy Extreme. On the other hand, the RTX 3070 is a massive 47-63% faster than the RTX 2070 in games, and 53-126% faster in synthetic benchmarks. This is an incredible result. After all, the RTX 3070 is the direct successor to the RTX 2070, so the fact that it also beats the RTX 2080 Ti is just a very nice bonus.
NVIDIA now plans to launch the GeForce RTX 3070 on October 29. The review embargo lifts the same day, meaning independent benchmarks will go live at the same time.
