Overclocker Splave set a new world record in the HWBOT x265 Benchmark - 4k, pushing an Intel Core i7 7740X to 6979 MHz.
The Core i7 7740X's launch was a strange and highly controversial event. It was essentially the same Core i7 7700K, just on LGA2066 and 100 MHz faster.
Some might rightly wonder about its 4-channel memory support. The answer is: none, literally. This CPU only supports dual-channel DDR4. Install modules in all available LGA2066 slots, and it won't even recognize half of the total capacity.
This brief digression simply highlights how unpopular this CPU was, both at launch and long after.
However, the Core i7 7740X did appeal to enthusiasts, and for good reason. For starters, LGA2066 motherboards typically feature much higher quality components, and the socket boasts more power pins, which greatly improves stability at high frequencies.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИAmerican overclocker Splave, armed with a Core i7 7740X processor and an ASRock X299 OC Formula motherboard, pushed the CPU to 6979 MHz, setting a record in the model category for HWBOT x265 Benchmark - 4k:
⤢ ВІДКРИТИI wouldn't have spent so much time on the introduction if the Core i7 7740X hadn't also enabled Splave to claim gold among all quad-core processors.
To hit such high frequencies, the processor was delidded and cooled with liquid nitrogen. The American enthusiast opted for Thermal Grizzly Kryo thermal paste instead of the stock thermal interface material.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИThe power source was an Enermax Maxtytan 1250W PSU.
Hopefully, this is just the beginning for the Core i7 7740X, and Splave will soon unleash an avalanche of new records with this 'controversial' quad-core.
