Quite suddenly, yesterday, in a press release from Electronic Arts, information appeared that the company would return its projects to the Steam digital distribution service for games.

EA Access will not launch until Spring 2020, however, some games will appear on Steam much earlier. For example, the not yet released Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order can already be pre-ordered through the Valve service:

But, as is the case with EA, a fly in the ointment awaits us this time.

Wherever you buy the game, you’ll need an EA account anyway, but that’s not all. Also, along with the account, you will need to additionally install the Origin store client.

This is the start of an exciting partnership with Valve that will enable us to innovate for PC players around the world. With our subscriptions, great games, and more, we’re thrilled to give players in the Steam and Origin communities access to the best games when and where they want to play.

Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts

It’s a good day for gamers. We’re excited to partner with EA to not only offer our great games and subscription services on Steam but also open up our communities to each other in an unprecedented way that will benefit gamers and developers around the world.

The press release also mentions the upcoming launch of The Sims 4 and Unravel 2 on Steam before the end of 2019. The rest of the games, such as Apex Legends, FIFA 20, and Battlefield V, will be available on the Valve platform much later, but before the end of 2020.
