Crytek says SSDs are the key to next-gen gaming on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Next. Microsoft and Sony's new consoles arrive next year.
Microsoft and Sony are launching their new consoles in just over a year, and it's clear that major developers have already received their devkits.
For instance, WccfTech recently extracted some details from Crytek, the studio behind the renowned Crysis. The company is poised to release its new project, Hunt: Showdown, on PS4 and Xbox One, and likely on next-gen consoles too.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИSony and Microsoft have confirmed their next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles are launching in Fall 2020, and we already know some specs: AMD Zen 2 / Navi architectures, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, support for up to 8K resolution and 120 frames per second, plus custom-designed solid-state drives meant to drastically cut loading times. What are your thoughts on these early specs? Should we anticipate 'revolutionary' games from these new consoles, or merely 'evolutionary' ones?
The truly game-changing innovation will undoubtedly be the new, promised fast storage (SSD). Beyond the obvious benefit of reduced loading times, this will unlock numerous possibilities for games that constantly stream data into RAM – particularly open-world titles like GTA. It's a direction game engines will need to evolve quickly to leverage, but it’s certainly exciting.
Based on their response, Crytek is also eager for next-gen consoles to fully harness their advanced hardware capabilities.
And considering their track record, the German studio undoubtedly knows how to leverage powerful hardware.
