AMD is preparing a new AM5 platform, set to replace AM4 in 2022. It will support 5nm Ryzen 5000 processors, DDR5, and USB 4.0, but without PCI-e 5.0.
According to the latest information from GamersNexus, AMD's next-gen AM5 platform will support Ryzen 5000 desktop processors. The source also states these chips will use a 5-nanometer manufacturing process.
Beyond the improved process node and updated architecture, AMD's new platform focuses on two advanced technologies: DDR5 RAM and the high-speed USB 4.0 interface. What's most interesting is that, contrary to earlier speculation and persistent rumors, AMD won't implement PCI-e 5.0, instead sticking with the current PCI-e 4.0.
Honestly, this isn't surprising at all. The current PCI-e implementation is more than sufficient for the vast majority of peripherals, including ultra-fast SSDs. So, it's a minor loss.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИOverall, as AMD promised, the current AM4 socket will have a long and rich life, supporting a fourth generation of Ryzen processors. Then, in 2022, AM5 will replace it. Hopefully, AM5 will be even more advanced and just as long-lived.
