A new AMD Athlon mobile processor recently appeared in the GeekBench benchmark database. A key distinguishing feature of the chip is the addition of the "Gold" suffix to its model name.
Intel uses a similar naming structure for its Xeon server processors and some desktop Pentium models. AMD itself has never used such designations before, though the company did employ a similar scheme in the early 2000s with the PR rating of its CPUs (for example, the Athlon XP 1700+ processor, clocked at just 1466 MHz, was significantly faster than a 1700 MHz Pentium 4). Perhaps AMD is now trying to signal to consumers that their processors are at least on par with, if not better than, the competition's chips. But this is just speculation.
