WoW Shadowlands gets ray tracing, but comparison screenshots show RTX shadows aren't impressive, and similar quality is achievable with DirectX 11.
The beta client for World of Warcraft Shadowlands finally includes a setting for activating ray-traced shadows. A WoW beta tester and frequent contributor to ru.wowhead.com quickly published comparison screenshots pitting "normal shadows" against those "enhanced" by RTX technology. The final result might surprise you (in more ways than one):
If these screenshots are authentic, Blizzard's RTX-powered shadows aren't particularly impressive. Similar high-quality, diffused shadows are already achievable with the older DirectX 11 API, without needing advanced DirectX 12 or RTX tech. Furthermore, this would mean gamers wouldn't need to upgrade to relatively expensive GeForce RTX cards, instead opting for something like a GeForce GTX or Radeon RX.
