World of Tanks is getting ray tracing (RT shadows) thanks to a collaboration between Wargaming and Intel. This technology will deliver more realistic shadows and enhance the overall gaming experience.
The Belarusian development team continues to refine their proprietary 'Core' engine. Following the introduction of multi-threading, they've now set their sights on implementing Ray Tracing technology.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИWith the addition of RT shadows to the game – a technology developed by Wargaming in close cooperation with Intel – we'll be able to render our game's 'main characters' in higher quality. Even the smallest details will cast incredibly realistic shadows when hit by sunlight. RT shadows will provide even deeper immersion into the atmosphere of tank battles and a more enjoyable gaming experience. RT shadow technology will work on all graphics cards supporting DirectX 11 API and above, but only for vehicles that haven't been destroyed and are under direct sunlight. Players will be able to enable or disable this feature in the game settings. Support for these new shadows on vehicles will be added in upcoming updates after testing is complete.
According to Wargaming, this will be one of the most accessible ray tracing implementations to date. Notably, gamers won't need a specific brand of graphics card to run the game with 'RT shadows'; any GPU with ray tracing support will work.
Of course, currently, only NVIDIA graphics cards support this technology. However, referring back to information from WG Fest, the Belarusian company is partnering with Intel. This instills much more confidence in the new technology, as previous collaborations with Intel have already paid off, making World of Tanks run significantly better (and, who would've thought, not just on Intel CPUs).
Ray Tracing shadows will be added in upcoming updates, likely by the end of this year or early next year.
