Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 855 Plus: minor CPU boost (4.2%) but a significant 15% GPU performance jump for mobile gaming. An optimization, not a full upgrade.
Qualcomm has just announced an updated version of its current flagship SOC, the Snapdragon 855 Plus. The new processor features the same computing cores with the same 1+3+4 configuration as its predecessor, but operates at higher frequencies – 2.96GHz versus 2.84GHz.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИHowever, it seems that the frequency increase will only affect one core, resulting in a 4.2% boost in single-thread performance.
Things are much better with the GPU. Here, Qualcomm decided to please mobile gaming enthusiasts.
The updated Adreno 640 graphics processor also retained its internal configuration, but its frequency was raised from 585MHz to 672MHz! This allows for an impressive 15% increase compared to the previous GPU.
In conclusion, the Snapdragon 855 Plus is merely an optimization and overclocking of the previous model. Expecting something drastically different just half a year after the Snapdragon 855's announcement would be foolish.
