The PlayStation 5 is larger than the Xbox Series X. Its substantial size is driven by the need for efficient cooling of its powerful AMD Ryzen chip.
Just a couple of days ago, Sony finally unveiled its upcoming PlayStation 5 console to the public. The fifth "Gaming Station" boasts a rather extravagant and futuristic design. You can find more details in our coverage of the PS5 Show via this link.
Initially, Sony's console appeared much smaller than Microsoft's recently announced Xbox Series X. This isn't surprising, as the Japanese giant presented the PS5 in a "vacuum," so to speak. However, things aren't quite that simple.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИAs you can see, the image above features various consoles, from the PS3 FAT and Xbox 360 to the PS5 and Xbox Series X. On all devices shown, recurring zones—the USB ports and disc drive slot—are highlighted in red. Enthusiasts used the precise dimensions of these ports to estimate the PlayStation 5's approximate size.
Based on these calculations, Sony's new creation is significantly more massive than the already sizable PlayStation 3 FAT and the, frankly, large (for its time) Xbox One. Early estimates put the PS5's height at approximately 37.5 centimeters.
At first glance, this seems odd; a console shouldn't be the size of a mini-PC. However, don't forget that it essentially *is* a mini-PC, featuring a custom AMD Ryzen chip developed specifically for Sony's needs. This is a 16-thread monster with powerful integrated graphics that requires substantial cooling. A console can't afford loud cooling, as it's often located in a living room or bedroom. Furthermore, it often stays powered on almost 24/7—used for gaming during the day and downloading new content overnight.
This left the Japanese company with no choice: they had to create a powerful yet cool-running console. We already got a glimpse of the PS5's power during the last presentation, but we'll only learn about the cooling system's performance after Sony's eagerly anticipated device is finally released.
Good thing the wait won't be much longer.
