Xbox insists its budget-friendly Xbox Series S won't hold back next-gen game development, pointing out that the console supports all modern tech features.
Xbox technical specialist Andrew Goossen has weighed in on the widespread narrative that the budget Xbox Series S is holding back next-gen graphics.
The Xbox Series S isn't holding back next-gen potential; it's driving it. We considered using the existing Xbox One X as our budget option, but ultimately decided the Series S was a much better choice. For one, the Series S is slightly faster than the One X (by up to 25%) while being significantly cheaper to manufacture. We realized we simply couldn't sell the Xbox One X for $300. On top of that, the Series S supports advanced features like an SSD that weren't even on the table for last-gen hardware.
Goossen has a point: CPU performance on the Xbox Series S and X is identical, with the key differences being GPU power and total memory. But since the budget console only targets 1440p, its 10GB memory pool should be more than enough.
