Metal Gear Solid 4, a PlayStation 3 icon, can now be played on the RPCS3 emulator, albeit with visual artifacts. This marks significant progress by the developers.
Just recently, on August 5th, we reported on Metal Gear Solid 4's first successful boot on the PlayStation 3 emulator. However, yesterday, news broke that the developers have pushed much further. The promised day has finally arrived! Thanks to a recent enhancement by eladash, the highly anticipated PlayStation exclusive, Metal Gear Solid 4, is now running in RPCS3. Above, you can watch some gameplay footage. Work on getting this title running has been ongoing since 2017, starting with Numan's sys_overlay implementation and further improvements from Nekotekina and eladash. Through the developers' efforts, RPCS3 has reached a new milestone in its accuracy and compatibility. While there's still much to improve for graphics and performance, a few testers have already managed to raise the frame rate limit to 60 frames per second using the vblank feature implemented by eladash last month, with no negative impact on gameplay. Further tests are needed to confirm this, but the initial outlook is overwhelmingly positive! Snake took his time, but it seems the wait has finally paid off.
This is likely just the beginning; we can probably expect fully adequate visuals and acceptable framerates soon for one of the most memorable games on the PlayStation 3.
