GDC 2020 has been postponed due to COVID-19. Organizers are disappointed but plan to host it this summer, especially after numerous studios had already pulled out.
In an official address to the community, GDC 2020 organizers announced their difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference, originally scheduled for March this year, after consulting with their partners.
The organizers also noted they're extremely disappointed by this turn of events, having prepared for the conference all year.
We want to thank all our customers and partners for their continued support. We're constantly reminded of the amazing things that happen when the community unites and connects at GDC. For this reason, we intend to hold the GDC event later this summer. We'll work with our partners to finalize details and share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.
Based on the official statement, GDC 2020 will likely still happen this summer, though precise details are currently unavailable.
It's clear the conference was postponed due to the accelerating spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
Before GDC 2020's postponement, major studios like Microsoft, Sony, EA, Kojima Productions, Amazon, Blizzard, Epic Games, and CD Projekt RED had already pulled out. It's possible the organizers simply had no other choice but to cancel.
For the same reason, the IEM Katowice 2020 championship for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, currently underway, is playing to empty arenas. Esports pros are essentially performing only for Twitch stream viewers.
