Blizzard has delayed the release of Warcraft III Reforged to January 28, 2020. The studio cites the need for further polish, compatibility with original maps, and esports requirements as reasons.
The developer states this is a necessary move, as the game requires more time for polish. Blizzard had previously assured fans that Warcraft III Reforged would launch by the end of this year, but delays mounted, and the project has now officially been postponed.
Honestly, this isn't surprising. Blizzard took on quite a challenge. First, Warcraft III Reforged needs to be compatible with custom maps made for the original game. Second, porting the campaign to the new engine requires careful handling. This is critical, especially since some fans have already voiced concerns about the remake's overly "realistic" graphics.
Finally, the game must run flawlessly because Blizzard plans to host esports tournaments. Regular gamers will also benefit from this, as it means Warcraft III Reforged should have excellent netcode.
Warcraft III Reforged was officially announced at BlizzCon 2018 and was originally slated for release in the second half of 2019.
However, as revealed today in the company's official blog, the project will now be available to the public on January 28, 2020.
