AMD's new Ryzen 9 5900HX mobile processor has topped the PassMark charts, scoring a record-breaking 24,039 points in the multi-threaded benchmark.
The first unofficial benchmarks have leaked for one of AMD's upcoming flagship mobile processors, the Ryzen 9 5900HX. While the 5900HX isn't the absolute fastest chip in the Cezanne FP6 lineup, its performance was still enough to top the PassMark mobile CPU charts in both single-threaded and multi-threaded benchmarks.
But first, let's break down what the "HX" suffix actually means:
U-series: 15-watt chips for thin-and-light laptops;
HS-series: 35-watt processors for slim, high-performance gaming laptops;
H-series: 45-watt high-performance mobile chips;
HX-series: 45-watt+ unlocked chips designed for overclocking.
This makes it clear that we're looking at one of the top mobile processors with overclocking support. Though in reality, laptop overclocking is often more of a marketing gimmick than a real benefit, given how hard it is to squeeze extra megahertz out of a CPU inside a cramped laptop chassis. But let's get back to the star of the show:
The Ryzen 9 5900HX is a full-fledged 8-core, 16-thread processor with an unlocked multiplier and a 3300 MHz base clock. Its boost clock tops out at 4700 MHz, but because the chip is unlocked, future owners will be free to dial in their own frequencies.
The Ryzen 9 5900HX is destined for high-end gaming laptops like the ASUS ROG Zephyrus or the ASUS Strix series (one of which is actually the source of today's leak).
The Ryzen 9 5900HX scored an impressive 24,039 points in the PassMark multi-threaded benchmark. No other mobile processor has ever broken this barrier before:
