AMD states Zen 3 (Ryzen 4000) chips only work with X570/B550 and new chipsets. X570/B550 owners just need a BIOS update. Older boards might still get support.
AMD has officially announced that its next-generation Zen 3-based Ryzen processors will not be compatible with motherboards using older X470, B450, X370, and B350 chipsets. The upcoming CPUs will only work with current X570 and B550 boards, as well as the unannounced X670 and B650 chipsets.
Owners of existing X570 and B550 motherboards will only need to update their BIOS to ensure support for the next-gen Ryzen processors.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИHowever, we don't recommend hitting the panic button or throwing stones at AMD just yet. Let's first wait for the Ryzen 4000 chips to be announced and released. It's quite possible that some manufacturers will provide Zen 3 support for their X470 and B450 products (and maybe even X370). What AMD says are just recommendations, and partners might not fully adhere to them. Moreover, by making such a statement, AMD unburdens itself of many responsibilities, shifting them to its motherboard manufacturing partners and, to some extent, even giving them more leeway.
There's a small chance that BIOS updates enabling Zen 3 support on older boards might drop support for Ryzen 1000/2000 in favor of Ryzen 4000. Whether to update or not will depend on your needs. But this is purely speculative.
