AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards are likely to get more expensive in 2020. The reason: increasing demand and a shortage of GDDR6 video memory as manufacturers transition to the newer standard.
It's been a while since the cryptocurrency craze, and graphics card prices have largely stabilized. In fact, many models currently cost only slightly more than their official MSRPs. However, according to research from DigiTimes, 2020 could bring another round of price increases for AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards.
These claims aren't baseless. For instance, NVIDIA has started equipping even budget cards like the GeForce GTX 1650 with the new memory standard. AMD, on the other hand, launched its budget Radeon RX 5500 and high-end RX 5700 graphics cards directly with GDDR6 video memory. Both companies have, therefore, contributed to a shortage of the current standard.
Things could get worse once AMD releases its mid-range Radeon RX 5600 XT graphics card, as it will also feature GDDR6 memory, just like the RX 5500 and RX 5700.
