Xbox Studio head Matt Booty teases Halo Infinite's massive world, updated engine, and return to roots.
E3 2019 offered surprisingly little information about Halo Infinite. Its trailer merely showed a new character stranded in space, only for the series' iconic protagonist, Master Chief, to arrive and rescue them.
Matt Booty, head of Xbox Studio, recently appeared on the Game Informer show to shed some light on the upcoming Halo Infinite.
I think the first thing that’s incredibly cool is where this game is heading and how the developers are thinking about expanding the world. You have to be careful with the word ‘sandbox’ because it’s so nebulous. But what 343 Industries is doing to build this big universe, this huge set of gameplay scenarios, and just a ton of stuff to make the world interesting for you to explore — it’s amazing. What they’re working on is really cool! Secondly, they’re also refining their Slipspace engine to meet current game development requirements. You know, Halo 5’s design was arguably a bit ‘muddled.’ Halo Infinite, in contrast, feels more modern and cleaner. Yet, it also strongly echoes the series’ roots, which is truly great to see. I’d say Halo Infinite is both visually stunning and a more expansive game.
⤢ ВІДКРИТИJudging by the interview, Matt seems to be trying to distance himself from the term 'sandbox.' However, there's nothing wrong with that approach. For instance, Destiny 2, from Bungie (the developers behind the first three Halo titles), isn't a full-fledged sandbox either, and it certainly hasn't suffered for it.
Halo Infinite is slated to launch in late 2020 for Xbox One and PC. Frank O'Connor previously assured owners of the original Xbox One that they wouldn't be treated as second-class players, promising that Halo Infinite would look fantastic even on the older console.
