Activision CEO Bobby Kotick confirmed the company's plans to release multiple remasters in 2020, along with reimagining some older titles.
It seems Activision is serious about reviving more of its early 2000s projects and reimagining older games, following the tremendous success of remasters like Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, and Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick confirmed these plans during the company's Q4 2019 financial report.
Keep an eye out for our upcoming announcements. Beyond straightforward remasters, there's a lot of room right now for innovation and thinking about completely new content within these projects.
The CEO didn't specify which games would get remasters and which would get sequels. It's difficult to even speculate, given Activision's incredibly diverse portfolio of projects. This makes it incredibly interesting to see which ones the publisher will choose to revive, reimagine, or develop sequels for.
One idea that immediately comes to mind is a reimagining of the Tony Hawk series. We haven't seen a decent skateboarding simulator in quite a while, and Electronic Arts seems to be dragging its feet on Skate 4. This gives Activision a prime opportunity to fill that void. The key will be finding talented and passionate developers to avoid a repeat of the notorious Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5. In this specific case, a complete reimagining of the project would be a huge benefit.
