Team Meat discusses Super Meat Boy Forever's Epic Games Store exclusivity, stating developers wouldn't refuse such a deal. The game's creator shared insights on the partnership and criticism.
It's been known for a while that Super Meat Boy Forever, the sequel to the highly popular indie game, would be a timed exclusive for the Epic Games Store.
During the recent PAX West 2019 exhibition, Super Meat Boy Forever creator Tommy Refenes told Destructoid how the deal was made.
Epic Games told me they wanted a year of exclusivity for Super Meat Boy Forever on their store. At first, I was like, 'Oh... okay.' Then they said they'd guarantee good sales. Even then, I was like... I didn't even know what to ask for. So, they crunched the numbers and told me what they were offering. They did, and I said 'Yes!' It was simple. Once I got the numbers (presumably referring to the financial compensation for exclusivity), the fear of not launching on Steam for PC instantly vanished. That's important. It's really important for anyone in any industry: 'When you finish your work, you will definitely succeed.' I don't know anyone who wouldn't take that deal.
Refenes also shared his thoughts on the negative reactions concerning EGS:
Some user complaints about the Epic Games Store are valid, and others aren't.

Overall, it's pretty obvious. Epic Games is following Sony's playbook, paying developers good money for store exclusivity. For developers, there's no downside: the game essentially pays for itself during the exclusivity period (Epic Games might even compensate for financial losses if the game underperforms on their store).
Super Meat Boy Forever is set to release in late 2019 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.
