According to SK Hynix, the new DDR5 memory for mainstream platforms will provide a 50% increase in bandwidth over the current DDR4 standard. However, here it should be understood that we are talking about DDR4 with a frequency of 2133MHz. Accordingly, the top-end DDR4 memory modules currently on the market will surpass the new type of memory for some time. However, by 2022 the DDR5 frequency will exceed 5000 MHz and will bypass any of the modern DDR4 implementations.
In addition to double the frequency and, accordingly, increased bandwidth, the new standard DDR5 RAM will be able to reduce energy consumption and increase the potential volume of one module up to 64GB.
SK Hynix itself says that the frequencies of its DDR5 memory will start from 3200 MHz (which is already quite a lot and practically reaches the top DDR4 modules) and after some time will reach an impressive 8400 MHz.
As for the volume, SK Hynix is currently planning memory modules for 8, 16, 24, 32 and 64GB.
The introduction of a new type of RAM to the market is largely dependent on the CPU manufacturers, however, according to SK Hynix, the memory will appear in the market in 2021, and by 2022 it will occupy about 43% of the market.
