It has long been known that the sequel to the hugely popular indie game Super Meat Boy with the “Forever” prefix will be a temporary exclusive on the Epic Games store.

So, during the recent PAX West 2019 show, Super Meat Boy Forever creator Tommy Refenes told Destructoid about how the deal was made.

Epic Games told me they want a year of exclusivity for Super Meat Boy Forever in their store. At first, I was like, “Oh … good.” Then they said they would guarantee good sales. Even then, I kind of … I don’t even know what to ask for. So type in the numbers and tell me what you are proposing. ” They did, and I said “Yes! “. It was easy. After I got the numbers (apparently talking about exclusivity cash royalties), the level of fear of not launching on Steam for PC instantly evaporated.

It is important. This is very important for anyone in any industry: “When you are done with your job, you will definitely be successful.” I don’t know who would not take this deal.

Reference also shared his opinion on the negative reactions towards EGS:

Some user complaints about the Epic Games Store are valid, others are not.

Substantially.

In general, everything is pretty obvious. Epic Games followed Sony’s path and pays developers good money to make their projects exclusive to their store. For developers, there is not minus here at all – the game pays off at the stage of exclusivity (it can be in different ways, for example, Epic Games compensates for monetary losses if the game does not sell well in their store).

Super Meat Boy Forever is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS in late 2019.
